WordPress started out as a simple blogging platform that allowed bloggers to add text, pictures, and videos to their blog.  It has evolved into a complex Web site administration panel or content management system (CMS).

What is a custom Web site?

The definition of a custom Web site is more complex.  Before I explain what a custom Web site is, I need to define the two parts of a Web site.

Front end versus back end of Web site

There are two parts to a Web site:  the front end and the back end.  The front end is the part of the Web site that a visitor sees when they visit your URL (www.mywebsite.com).  The back end is the part of a Web site that the administrator sees when he logs in to make changes to the Web site.  The back end is usually accessed by going to a private URL (www.mywebsite.com/admin).

So what is a custom Web site?

A custom Web site can be one of three things:  it can be a custom front end that is installed for a WordPress Web site or another system that is similar.  It can be a custom administration panel or content management system (CMS) that is installed for a client.  Or it can be a custom front end AND back end that is developed for a client.

Advantages of WordPress

One of the major advantages of WordPress is that it is quick and easy to be implemented.  This keeps the cost down and the client’s Web site can be up-and-running quickly.  Another advantage is that many programmers are familiar with WordPress, so it is easy to find a programmer and also easy to have a new programmer take over if you are not happy with your current programmer for some reason.  Another advantage of WordPress is that there are many “plugins” which allow you to extend the native functionality of WordPress.  For example, if you want to add a different kind of photo gallery you can search for a photo gallery plugin that you like and install it quickly.  But keep reading because something that sounds too good to be true many times is too good to be true.

Disadvantages of WordPress

WordPress is slow to respond

I would say that the major disadvantage of WordPress is that it is very slow to respond even over a fast internet connection and on a very fast computer.  Usually, the front end and the back end of WordPress are both extremely slow to load.

WordPress themes usually have poorly written code

Most of the themes that are developed for WordPress are also extremely poorly written and the inefficient code causes them to load slowly as well. This can be frustrating for your Web site visitors and may cause them to leave your Web site if it takes too long to respond.

WordPress administration panels also take a long time to load

The administration panel is also slow to respond.  It takes patience to manage your Web site because you must keep waiting for each new page to load.  The WordPress admin is not designed in the most efficient way so it is necessary to keep switching to new admin pages in order to perform different functions.  This makes the administrator less productive and can lead to frustrations.
